Castles, Cafés, and Canals

Stockholm is the starting point for your adventure. Explore historic Gamla Stan, Stockholm’s oldest district, home of decadent palaces and brightly-colored, narrow houses. In Tallinn, explore the secret 17th-century tunnel system, peruse the medieval Old Town, or browse the shops and cafés of the lively city center. Next, enjoy an extended two-night stay in St. Petersburg, giving you plenty of time to discover lavish palaces, museums, and galleries. Don’t miss the Hermitage museum, with its 22 miles’ worth of exhibits. A high-speed train excursion to Moscow gives you a chance to explore the arts, culture, and history of this vibrant city centre.

In Helsinki, interesting architecture (like the Temppeliaukio Church, a round cathedral built into rock in the city center) exists alongside lush green spaces and lively public parks. The Esplanadi (or Espa, as it’s known locally) is a favorite with residents, and people can often be found picnicking here while taking in free live music shows. Next up, you’ll have a night at sea to relax and rejuvenate before your next port – enjoy leisurely dinners, live music, and a lavish spa treatment or two to pass the time in style.

After an overnight at sea, we’ll dock in Warnemünde, a former fishing village turned resort destination lined with sandy beaches, charming lanes, and historic homes. Take a tour to Berlin, home to important monuments such as Brandenburg Gate, a section of the Berlin Wall, and Checkpoint Charlie. It’s also an incredible destination for shopping, dining, and the arts. Cruise along the Kiel Canal, the world’s busiest artificial waterway linking the North and Baltic Seas, before arriving in Amsterdam. Stretch your legs on a bike tour of this canal-filled city, which boasts more than 1,200 bridges and countless museums, galleries, and cafés.

You’ll stay in Amsterdam overnight, so there’s plenty of time to sample Bitterballen (crispy deep-fried meatballs) and Stroopwafel (two thin waffles sandwiching a layer of sweet, gooey syrup) in between visiting world-famous museums like Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum. Make sure to save some room, though – Bruges is your next port and you’re going to want to try the fries, in between the sparkling Diamond Museum and the sweet Choco-Story.

Your journey wraps up in Southampton, a longtime marine hub (and the departure point for two well-known vessels, the Mayflower and the Titanic.) Explore the natural hot springs of nearby Bath or immerse yourself in the mystery of Stonehenge, also a short jaunt away.

This is the world's busiest artificial waterway, linking the North Sea with the Baltic. Operating since 1895, it was widened to accommodate larger vessels in early 20th century. Still narrow enough to keep ships close to shore, and with no locks, it's basically a gentle cruise through the backyards and gardens of local folk, whom you may see riding their bicycles or picnicking on a fine afternoon.
