Ancient Capitals, Amazing Coastal Towns

Embark on a journey for the senses with Azamara. Your Mediterranean adventure through Italy and Greece departs from Rome, where you’ll set course for the breathtaking Amalfi coast. First stop: Sorrento. Beloved by literary greats and society’s elite since its days as a must-stop on the 19th-century ‘Grand Tour’, Sorrento remains a first-class destination. Palatial villas and beautiful piazzas climb the stark cliffs of Sorrento, known as the gateway to Capri. Soak in the sun, the views, and the food. Like the taste of the lemons Sorrento is known for, when it comes time to leave at your late-night departure, you’ll be feeling bittersweet.

Next, charming Amalfi. This quintessential Italian coastal town is a photographer’s delight. Stroll the winding streets, visit the Paper Museum, hit the shops, or simply sunbathe at the beach. No matter what, you’ll be living la dolce vita.

Sicily has been captivating travelers since the time of Homer and Virgil and when you visit Siracusa, you’ll see why. The archaeological park of Neapolis transports you right back to ancient Greece, the Fonte Aretusa plants you firmly in the center of town, and the cannoli will take your tastebuds straight to heaven!

Next, you’ll traverse the Ionian Sea to the Greek Island Kefalonia and its capital, Argostoli. Don’t miss the stylish shops and cafés of Lithostroto, the town’s pedestrian shopping street, or, if it’s adventure you crave, the Drogarati Cave and Melissani underground lake. With a late-night departure, you’ll have time to enjoy a beautiful dinner, too.

The port of Katakolon is your gateway to ancient Olympia and your next stop. Explore roads, monuments, the original Olympic stadium, and of course see the Temple of Hera, where the Olympic flame has been lit for more than 2,000 years.

The final Greek Island of your journey is Crete, where a day spent exploring the island’s second-largest city—Chania. A modern city on ancient soil, Chania is an intersection of cultures, from ancient Minoan palaces, to Byzantine churches to the vestiges of Venice at the height of its naval power. Your journey ends in another thriving capital that has endured the changes of time: Athens.
