Set off on a leisurely journey that rambles across the Shetland countryside to provide unique glimpses at local life and ancient history. Drive past fields dotted with Shetland Sheep grazing peacefully and stop for a close encounter with some delightfully inquisitive Shetland Ponies, once a vital part of crofting life and forever adorable with their diminutive size, shaggy coats and flowing manes. Your journey leads to the Jarlshof Ruins, the remains of homes dating back to the Bronze Age that were uncovered during a raging storm at the end of the 19th century. Enter underground passages, known as “souterrains” that may have been used as cold stores centuries ago, and witness the last vestiges of a once-great broch, an ancient drystone tower, half of which has crumbled into the sea over the ages. Explore this rolling landscape of ruins that paint a remarkable picture of the Iron Age.
