Discover how profoundly sugar, known as the "sweet gold," has influenced Motril's history with a visit to the sugar museum, a former sugar factory. Take a guided tour and learn how sugar has shaped southern Spain's culture. The region's microclimate is ideal for growing sugarcane, which—over the centuries—has brought great wealth to the Spaniards. It was such an important crop that Christopher Columbus carried sugarcane plants from southern Spain to the New World on his second voyage. Later, sugar processed from as far away as Asia made its way to Motril, where it was then exported to the Americas. At the restaurant, enjoy a professional show cooking demonstration, of the typical Andalusian piononos being prepared. This traditional Spanish desert consists of a thin layer of sponge rolled into a cylinder, flavored with different kinds of syrup, and covered with caramelized creme patissiere. Buen provecho!
