Explore Luanda's troubled past and vibrant present on a relaxing drive past the city's historic landmarks. Luanda was under colonial rule until 1975. At this point, the Angolan Civil War began. When the 27-year civil war between communist and anti-communist factions ended in 2002, 500,000 people had died. Today, you can see Luanda's vibrant resurgence thanks to its wealth of oil and diamonds. Enjoy a scenic drive along Marginal Bay, passing the Igreja de Senhora de Nazaré, and San Miguel Fort. The fort defended Luanda from French, Spanish, and Dutch armies until 1641, when the Dutch seized Luanda. Take in stunning views of the Ilha de Luanda, admiring the beautiful Atlantic coastline. Finally, visit the Agostinho Neto Mausoleum, an obelisk believed to have been gifted to Luanda from the Russian government. On your way back to the ship, pass the National Bank of Angola, an example of colonial architecture.
