Uncover the traditions, culture, and rich history of the inland Basque Country on this scenic journey to the charming medieval town of Vitoria where you'll meet the last remaining espadrille atelier. Yves Saint Laurent brought the humble rope-soled flat-footed espadrille to the world in the 1960s. Yet, the shoe has 13th century origins, dating back to the days when Basque foot soldiers wore the shoes. You will visit the only surviving atelier of hand-crafted canvas espadrille shoes. Learn time-honored shoe-making traditions from the local atelier. Braid the jute rope that will be spun on a warp and become the sole. Then, apply rubber and hand-stitch the cotton fabric to the espadrille. After your shoe-making workshop, you'll have a pair of hand-crafted espadrilles to take home.
