Experience the history, culture, and natural beauty of Hokianga on this full-day tour. Absorb the history of this area where Kupe the first Maori explorer landed more than a thousand years ago, followed approximately 200 years ago by some of the first European settlers to New Zealand. Your tour begins at historic Hokianga Harbor which is unique in many ways, not least for the stunning high sand dunes which frame the north side of the entrance to the harbour. Search the mighty Waipoua Forest to meet Tane Mahuta, the "Lord of the Forest." It's said this massive Kauri Tree is over 3000 years old! Head to a quiet harborside location for a delicious lunch. After lunch tour the Waimate Mission House, where the second Treaty of Waitangi was signed. It is the only survivor of three mission houses founded in 1830 on behalf of the Church Missionary Society. Enjoy and afternoon tea and walk in the footsteps of Darwin where he spent Christmas 1835 in the place built by missionaries in the heart of Maoridom.
Waipoua Forest: Meet the largest Kauri tree in the world that’s over 3000 years old, also known as "Tane Mahuta".
