Interview with Hotel Director Elisabeth Vogel
Q: Where were you were born and how did you get into this career?
I was born in Heidelberg, Germany. I was trained at Kempinski Vier Jahreszeiten, a 5-star hotel in Munich and am well versed in all aspects of hospitality including kitchen, service, housekeeping and financial. My favorite role was being front of house interacting with guests. I also previously worked as the Assistant Executive Housekeeper for King Hussein in Jordan in the early 90s.
Q: I assume you picked up different languages along the way. Which languages do you speak?
I am fluent in German and English and was in Italian, but I lost some of it.
Q: What do you love most about Azamara?
The family environment onboard, the small size of the ship and the beautiful destinations we visit.
Q: What excites you most about becoming hotel director?
I’m excited to lead such a wonderful team and play a part in all aspects of the cruise business that are so important to guest experience and satisfaction. Cuisine is central to the Azamara experience, and I’m lucky enough to have had the opportunity to act as a food and beverage manager and take over as hotel director. I’m passionate about having my team of 180 execute at the highest level.
Q: What is your top priority?
I want to make each guest’s experience truly special and have them continue to cruise with us for years to come.
Q: How do you spend your free time onshore?
I’m fascinated by history and I love to interact with locals wherever I go. I live by a motto one of my staff members once told me which is to “always take the side streets,” to truly explore a destination. It is captivating to see the history that is etched within important sites and to stand in the same place as so many historical figures.
Q: What are your favorite places to explore by ship?
Sicily for its history, friendliness of the people, the climate, hospitality, and for Siracusa Church, where you can see the mix of cultures left behind from thousands of years.
Q: What do you love to eat?
Anything Italian! Italian food is my absolute favorite.
Q: What do you most enjoy about working with Azamara?
The fun we have. Our lively family environment feels very natural. I consider Azamara my home. The company really values the happiness of our guests but also our crew. The captain is very approachable, which is not always common on other lines.
