Experience the extraordinary biodiversity of New Zealand during this excursion to two protected natural areas. In Zealandia, the natural ecosystem is paramount. This fenced sanctuary is intent on restoring and maintaining native plants and protecting the land from invasive species. Its attentive care has resulted in a pristine nature scenario where nearly a square mile of flora and fauna form a unique ecological island. Look for the tautara, an endemic lizard known as a living fossil because it is the only surviving lizard of its order, which flourished during the Mesozoic Era, 200 million years ago. Keep an eye out for the giant weta, too, the world’s largest insect. Afterwards, take a guided nature walk at Otari Native Botanic Garden and Wilton's Bush Reserve, a public garden dedicated solely to native plants.
